In May 2021,Darlene Okpo, an NYC native and educator, opened Adanne Bookshop in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood and committed to providing an inclusive and accessible space for readers to discover, explore, and appreciate books written by authors of color. Adanne Bookshop strives to be a vibrant and welcoming hub of knowledge, creativity, and understanding in our community. Through our carefully curated selection of books, we hope to inspire and empower readers to broaden their perspectives and foster meaningful conversations.
Da Book Joint is a Black woman-owned business and a bookstore created with the purpose of uniting lovers of literature with diverse bestselling and rising authors. We’ve been in operation since 2007 and since then, we have developed a thriving community for our customers, where they can easily purchase books they love and come together with like-minded individuals through virtual and in-person literary event.
Founded by author Victoria Scott-Miller, Liberation Station Bookstore is North Carolina’s first Black-owned children’s bookstore. Since 2019, we’ve trailblazed the industry as an independent, globally recognized literary space committed to making representation accessible and amplifying Black voices. As booksellers and storytellers, we thrive in unconventional spaces—pioneering creative programming that ensures Black children are both seeing themselves and being seen. Liberation Station is more than a bookstore—it’s a movement rooted in literacy, legacy, and liberation.
Urban Reader Bookstore is a unique and vibrant literary hub specializing in African American books. Our mission is to celebrate the rich and diverse voices of African American authors and provide a platform for their compelling stories and perspectives. At Urban Reader, we pride ourselves on offering a vast selection of thousands of new books that cater to the varied interests and tastes of our readers.
@BlackBabyBooks is an initiative of Boxxout Enterprises, a small business that designs creative solutions for social change. We have been really successful in helping people discover children’s books with Black characters, and equally as successful in helping indie Black children’s book authors promote their books.

Brown is a mom, baller, educator and author of several children's book, including 'Milk Truck Mondays', a book that depicts the strength of one little girl who will stop at nothing to obtain the education she deserves. This tale of courage and perseverance will inspire children of all ages. Lekeisha is also the author of 'Courageous Baller', a heartfelt children's book. In June 2020, Brianna created an Instagram page and instinctively named it @litforblackkids. While she was not sure what the end game would be, she knew that she wanted to share books that feature Black authors and Black protagonists with the world. It was important for others to know the authors and the books exist despite hearing time after time in the media that they did not. Many of these books and others are now available for purchase at Litforblackkids.org.
